Jewelry Manufacturing

Process of Jewelry Manufacturing

Designing:

The term “designing” can be generally applied to most of the jewelry manufacturing process. However, when making customized jewelry, the manufacturing process will begin with the designing stage, where the client will indicate what he or she is looking for from their customized jewelry. The client – with the help of the jewelry manufacturer – will design the setting and indicate which gemstones, engravings and other details they want with their jewelry.

Casting:

The casting process requires a very skilled jewelry manufacturer or caster to help make the original design or concept into a reality. Using the designs provided by the client, the caster will use wax to shape and mold into a replica. Once the cast has been created and approved by the client, the designer will place the wax casts into a steel molding, which is then filled with a special powder. These are heated until the wax melts away, leaving nothing remaining but the liquefied metal. The metal cools and solidifies into the custom shape.

Creation of Metal Alloy:

To create the specific alloy that the client desires for their customized jewelry, an expert jeweler will heat down a fine version of the metal until it can be combined with other types of alloys. This process is more common with gold jewelry, as it’s usually mixed with nickel, copper and other types of metals to give it more durability and strength.

Stone Setting:

Once the initial jewelry shape has been made, the jeweler will work to create the kind of setting specified on the custom order. This setting will contain the diamond or gemstones of the ring.

Finishing:

After carefully setting the stone, the jeweler will use several types of finishing to give the jewelry its special shine and luster. For example, the designer may choose to rub the metal with cloth, or steam finish it for better cleaning. The designer can also use special types of finishing methods, such as hammer finishing, to give it a more unique look.
